MUSC OT and PT Program Application Deadline Information

August 24, 2011

Dear Health Advisors,
I am providing you with my annual update for you to use when advising potential Master’s Degree Occupational Therapy (OT) Students and Clinical Doctorate Physical Therapy (DPT) Students.
There are no deadline or prerequisite changes this year. The Early/Priority and the Regular cycle applications are both for students to enter on May 23, 2012.
The big issue this year is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). We have posted boldly on our website the importance of taking the GRE before August 1, 2011 in order for us to have an application completed for the early/priority deadline of October 15, 2011.
If students do not complete the GRE until after August 1, 2011, they will be unable to achieve having a complete application by the early/priority deadline. The new format GRE scores will begin to be distributed sometime early in November 2011. Students taking the new format GRE are still recommended to take the test at least 6 weeks prior to the regular cycle application deadline to be sure that GRE scores arrive in time for the application deadlines.

The Regular Cycle deadlines are:

Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy, December 31, 2011
Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy, January 15, 2012

The new GRE general test will provide scores from 130-170 for the verbal and quantitative sections and scores from 6.0 down to 0 for the analytical writing section. Percentile scores will be provided for each component of the test but currently tables do not exist to inform us of what score in each section will achieve what percentile score.

The attached documents (they are attached below) do provide you with data on the numbers of applicants, GPA, GRE scores and other useful information about our OT and PT program. Do obviously contact me if you have any questions. The program websites are at:

Doctorate in Physical Therapy www.musc.edu/chp/pt/ptmain.htm
Master’s in Occupational Therapy www.musc.edu/chp/ot/otmain.htm

The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine

The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine is a private medical school that focuses specifically on podiatric medicine.  This field of medicine is not very well known, yet growing and offers tremendous opportunities to students interested in becoming a doctor.

I would like to give a brief presentation to your group to class or student organization such as the Biology Club about podiatric medicine today, the education it involves, the academic requirements, financial aid, and the areas a podiatrist goes into. These include the following: Primary care, Sports Medicine, Orthopedics, Surgery, Geriatrics, Pediatrics, and Biomechanics.

I encourage you to look at our website and view book at http://www.ocpm.edu/?page=home-viewbook

We also offer a tremendous internship program in January, June, and July, which allows students to actually visit the campus.   During the internship, the student gets to shadow a current OCPM student as well as shadow podiatrist at the hospitals and clinics that we are affiliated with.  It is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the profession.  You can learn more about the internship at http://www.ocpm.edu/?page=admission-internships

South Carolina College of Pharmacy

The application will be available starting
Friday, July 01, 2011
with a completion deadline of
Sunday, January 01, 2012.

PrePharmacy Program

picRequirements

Admission to the South Carolina College of Pharmacy is competitive and is based on the applicant’s completion of pre-pharmacy requirements, GPA, academic record, letters of recommendation, interview evaluations, PCAT scores, honors/awards, extracurricular activities, work experience, and student personal statement concerning their goals for a career in pharmacy. Applicants must take the PCAT and have official scores reported prior to the end of the application period, on or before January 1st of the year of anticipated admission. In order to apply, a candidate must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Applicants must provide an official copy of all college transcripts, including all grades for courses taken through the fall semester prior to the application deadline. Those currently enrolled at either USC Columbia or MUSC may have their USC/MUSC transcripts generated internally at no cost for pharmacy admissions. As a state-assisted institution, preference will be given to in-state applicants. In-state students are defined as South Carolina residents and any non-South Carolina residents attending a South Carolina college or university. In-state status as defined here only applies to the admission process. Residency for the purpose of tuition will be based upon the South Carolina Code of Laws.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted electronically through the Application Portal below. You must designate your preferred campus (USC-Columbia or MUSC-Charleston). The SCCP Admissions Committee will evaluate all applications and each is rated based on criteria (such as GPA, PCAT*, extracurricular activity, work history, letters of reference, prior degree and personal statement) established by the Committee.

Once evaluated, applicants are ranked and then placed in the campus of their preference. Admission to each campus is made on a space-available basis (i.e. 110 students at the USC campus and 80 students at the MUSC campus). If one campus reaches capacity prior to all students being placed, students are considered candidates for the other campus if this option is indicated in the application.

The online processing fee is payable by electronic check or credit card (Visa or MasterCard) only. The non-refundable application fee for the South Carolina College of Pharmacy is $95.00 (US dollars).

*Applicants must take the PCAT and have official scores reported prior to the end of the application period, on or before January 1st.

Priority Admission Guidelines

The South Carolina College of Pharmacy program has a priority admission program for the academically superior student. To qualify for the priority admission program, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Have earned at least 3.60 GPA in prerequisite coursework
  2. Submit official PCAT scores and name a minimum score of 70% percentile rank composite score.
  3. Submit a completed application with references, PCAT scores, and official transcripts to the Office of Enrollment Management by October 1st. Candidates that have completed the PCAT exam prior to October 1st will be considered for priority admission.

Candidates will be scheduled for interviews between October 25th and November 15th. This will allow enough time for files to be updated by the Office of Enrollment Management for a cutoff period of October 1st.

Admission decisions for accepted priority admission candidates will go out in early January. This will allow the committee to review completed transcripts from the Fall semester prior to making an admission decision. Admission through the priority admission program is on a space available basis. Students who are not accepted will be considered for regular admission at the appropriate time.

Changes In The South Carolina College of Pharmacy Admission Process

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon!  We hope that you are enjoying your summer!  We wanted to let you know about two important changes in the South Carolina College of Pharmacy (SCCP) admission process :
1.   The College has joined PharmCas! Many students find the PharmCas application process facilitates matching with the right pharmacy school. Applicants will need to complete the PharmCas application along with our SCCP supplemental application.
2.   Deadline for regular admission for both applications is January 7 … which is before the January PCAT (pharmacy college admission test). However, we will still accept the January PCAT! Students should get all other application material in and then report their PCAT scores directly to PharmCas; the PharmCAS code is 104.

DEADLINE ALERTS!
(Fall 2013 Admission)

Today  --  SCCP’s PharmCas application is now open!
July 1  -- SCCP supplemental application opens
Sept. 4  --  Applications due for consideration in early decision program*
Oct. 1  --  Application deadline for fall interviews (both PharmCas and SCCP supplemental)
Jan. 7  --  Applications due for regular decision consideration (both PharmCas and SCCP supplemental)

* The Early Decision Program is a binding option for applicants who have decided that a particular pharmacy degree program is their first choice and that they will enroll if accepted. As an Early Decision applicant, applicants can apply to only one pharmacy degree program. Applicants must have completed three or more required Pre-Pharmacy courses by the deadline.

Grenada Highest in Caribbean for
10-year Average Pass Rate on USMLE I

The newly published study in the February 2011 journal, Academic Medicine, on the USMLE performance of Caribbean medical schools once again reinforces St. George’s University’s position as the leader in the region. This article was the third in a series studying performance outcomes of the medical schools in the Caribbean region.

The February 2011 article shows that Grenada’s 10-year average for first-time pass rates:

·         Is 87.1% for Step 1 which:

    • Is the highest of any country in the Caribbean.
    • Is 31% higher than the average pass-rate for the rest of the Caribbean (56.3%).
Exceeded the pass rate of the closest ranking country with private medical schools (Dominica) by approximately 10%.
  • Is 85% for Step 2/CK which:
    • Is the highest of any country with private medical schools, and exceeded the pass rate of the closest ranking country with private medical schools (Dominica)  by approximately 10%
    • Is the second highest of any country in the Caribbean, just .4% behind Barbados which has had only 48 students take this examination in the entire 10 years of the study
    • Is 16.3% higher than the average pass rate for the rest of the Caribbean (68.7%).

It is notable that Grenada’s USMLE 1 first-time pass rate passed the 90% level when the first of the larger classes, which incorporated students who began basic science study in the KBTGSP program, took the examination.

In the last article on the topic of USMLE performance in October of 2008, Academic Medicine reported that Grenada was the 15-year leader in the Caribbean for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2/CK first time pass rates.

Programs at GA Campus-PCOM

My name is Aise Cannon.  I am an Admissions Assistant/ Recruiter here at GA Campus-PCOM where I primarily oversee the Masters of Biomedical Science program.  I wanted to start by introducing myself to you, as well as e-mail several clubs in order to set up some dates and times to visit the campus and conduct a presentation about our school and our programs.  Our campus is located in Suwanee, Georgia which is about 20 miles outside of the city of Atlanta.  We have two campuses, the main campus is in Philadelphia, and of course our Georgia campus.  At our main campus in Philadelphia, we offer the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine School, and Graduate Programs(MS in Biomedical Science, MS in Physician Assistant Studies, MS/ Pathway in Forensic Medicine, PsyD Post Doctoral in Clinical Psychology, MS/CAGS in Counseling & Clinical Health Psychology, PsyD/EdS/MS in School Psychology, MS in Organizational Development & Leadership, and Post Medical Graduate Research).  And, here at GA Campus-PCOM we offer the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine School, the Doctor of Pharmacy School, and Graduate Programs(MS in Biomedical Science, both thesis and non-thesis, and a MS in Organizational Development & Leadership).  I would like to speak to students who have chosen to major in an undergraduate degree program where one of their goals may be to pursue a Masters degree in Biomedical Science in order to prepare them for entry into a professional school(Osteopathic Medicine, Allopathic, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry, and Optemetry), or for a career path into various industries(Pharmacy, Physician Assistant studies, Medical Technology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Research and Development, Pharmaceutics, Science Teaching, Scientific Writing and Editing, Forensic Medicine, PhD Programs in Science, Public Health/ Epidemiology, Medical Law, or Medical Ethics).  Nonetheless, the bulk of the students who apply into our Masters of Biomedical Science program here at GA Campus-PCOM, are doing so with the idea in mind to use this program as a basis to increase their science GPA, and/ or increase their test scores for hopeful acceptance into a professional program of their choice.  We accept a total of 65 students per year, where the statistics are that 1/3 of these students are accepted into our Doctor of Osteopathic School, another 1/3 of these students are accepted into other professional schools within the United States, and the last 1/3 of these students continue on through the program to complete their Masters degree for other career goals that I previously listed.  Currently, I am in the process of setting up my fall recruitment schedule, and would love to coordinate a date and time where I can present to a group of pre-health students interested in a career in the health or sciences field, so as to bring more awareness about all of our programs.  Please send me the best days and times that work with your schedule so that I am able to let you know a good day and time for me to come out and conduct a presentation.  I look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,
