    Description

This course provides an in-depth study of reading comprehension instruction, equipping future and current educators with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to foster deep understanding and critical thinking in student readers. Students will explore the cognitive, linguistic, and motivational factors that influence reading comprehension, examine current research on effective instructional practices, and learn to design lessons that develop comprehension across diverse texts and student populations. The course covers a variety of comprehension strategies, including before, during, and after reading techniques, and emphasizes the integration of comprehension with vocabulary, background knowledge, and text structure awareness. Participants will engage in lesson planning, assessment design, and classroom application activities, preparing them to support all learners in becoming proficient, thoughtful readers.
